Cool Younger Brother

If you're only into trance, or dance-oriented electronic, then Younger Brother probably isn't for you. But if you enjoy a slower-paced groove full of rich synthetic soundscapes and glittering instrumentations, then you've got to hear Younger Brother! The frontman of the band, Simon Posford, runs his own record label Twisted, which is the greatest independent electronic label in the United Kingdom, and maybe the world.

The band has two studio albums so far, with a lot of promise for future recordings. Their first album, A Flock of Beeps, is extremely trippy. It's driven by strange sounds, and eerie vocals, but it's nonetheless beautiful. Their second album, The Last Days of Gravity, is a sonic masterpiece from beginning to end. Every song is perfectly crafted and catchy in an almost "pop" sense, but it never seems hollow or forced. The lyrics are deep, the vocals are stellar, and the album features more real instruments than the majority of the electronic albums in the world. Several of the songs are driven by guitar, and there's not a weak song on the album. I would say my favorite tracks are Happy Pills, and Ribbon on a Branch; but I can find something to like about all of them.

As I said before, I recommend this album to fans of slower-paced spacey music, a la Pink Floyd. But don't assume they sound anything like Floyd or any other band. Younger Brother is in a class of its own! Happy listening!

Thanks Sonia. Psychic Gibbon's a good one! I'll be posting plenty of reviews in the future, probably twice or three times a week.

Mr Posford!!

That guy has to be one of my heroes! One of the things Ive always loved about his style is his ability to morph between time signatures - much like metal does you know? Except you hardly notice its so smooth.

In electronica thats really difficult - hard to be spontaneous (for me at least). Modern software makes doing this a whole lot easier, but Simon has been doing it since Hallucinogen days....back when hardware was de rigeur!

Anyways, an awesome producer! Check out his other persona - Spongle
Peace
